NoirPanther

Your library. Your server. Your reader.

Features

Everything a reader needs

Built natively for each platform and designed around long reading sessions.

📖

EPUB reader

Native Readium-based reader: themes, fonts, typography, margins, columns, scroll or pages, table of contents, bookmarks, highlights and notes.

🖼️

Comics & PDF

Paged, vertical and horizontal modes, double-page spreads, pinch-zoom, tap zones, page slider with thumbnails. Manga opens right-to-left by itself — the reading direction comes from the file.

📥

Offline library

Download books and read with no network. Files are encrypted at rest, with keys kept in the system secure storage (Keychain on iOS and Mac, Keystore on Android). A server owner can allow offline reading even for people who may not download files.

🔄

Progress sync

Positions read offline are queued and delivered later. If the server moved on meanwhile, you choose what to keep.

📡

OPDS catalogs

OPDS 1.2 and 2.0 feeds with browsing, search and authentication — alongside your main server.

💬

Book clubs

Discussions with reactions, replies and message editing, right next to the book.

📱

Widgets

iOS home and lock-screen widget “Reading now” — jump straight back into the book.

🎨

Six themes

Four dark and two light themes. The default is Vibranium — violet on near-black, the one you are looking at.

📐

Every screen

Phone, tablet and a true desktop layout on Mac and wide iPad: master–detail browse and two-column book pages.

The server

Open-source server, on your hardware

The app connects to the NoirPanther server — an open-source fork of the Stump media server. You install it wherever you like: a home server, a NAS, a VPS. Your books never leave your machines.

  • MIT-licensed, source on GitHub
  • Everything Stump has, plus our own: six themes, a fully localized Russian web UI, encrypted offline reading, per-user content rules by tag, genre and publisher, book clubs, case-insensitive search in any language
  • Web interface for libraries, users and permissions; SQLite out of the box or PostgreSQL for large libraries
  • Docker image ghcr.io/vint1024/noirpanther for amd64 and arm64 — up and running in minutes; the server tells you when a new release is out
  • Prefer the original? The app also works with a stock Stump server: turn on “Stump compatibility” in the app settings.

Demo

Try it right now

A public demo server with a small library: public-domain classics in English and Russian, PDF picture books and comics. Open it in the browser, or add it in the app as a server.

The demo account is read-only and its reading progress is reset once a day. Please do not enter any personal data there. The books are in the public domain (Standard Ebooks, Wikisource, Internet Archive, Wikimedia Commons); the Pepper&Carrot comic is by David Revoy, licensed CC BY 4.0.

Transparency

What is open and what is not

We do not hide where things come from. The server is a fork of an open-source project and stays open. The mobile app is original, closed-source code.

  • Server: a fork of Stump by Aaron Leopold, MIT license. Both repositories are open — see below.
  • App: original code, UI and artwork by Ivan Kuvshinov. It talks to the server through its MIT-licensed API.
  • No analytics, no ads, no trackers, no accounts with us. The app talks only to the servers you add.
FAQ

Questions & answers

Do I need my own server?

Yes. NoirPanther is a client: it reads the library from a NoirPanther (Stump-compatible) server that you or someone you trust runs. To look around first, use the public demo server.

Can I use the app with the original Stump server?

Yes. Turn on “Stump compatibility” in the app settings: the app then uses only the standard Stump API and hides what exists only in our fork — encrypted offline reading without download permission, book clubs, series merging and the per-book reading direction. So you are free to run either server: the original Stump (source on GitHub) or the NoirPanther fork.

Does the app collect my data?

No. There is no analytics, advertising or tracking SDK in the app, and we run no backend that the app reports to. Server addresses and credentials are stored only on your device. See the Privacy Policy.

Which formats are supported?

EPUB, PDF and comic archives (CBZ/CBR and similar) — whatever the server can serve. EPUB files can also be imported and read without a server.

Is the app free?

Pricing will be announced with the store release. The server is free and open-source.

Is it an official Stump app?

No. NoirPanther is an independent project. The server is a fork of Stump; the app is written from scratch and is not affiliated with the Stump project.
